Church Fenton and Sherburn in Elmet are welcoming communities located east of Leeds in North Yorkshire, offering a blend of village charm, strong community spirit and excellent transport connections. Situated close to one another between Leeds, York and Selby, both locations provide a peaceful semi-rural lifestyle while remaining well connected to nearby towns and cities.
Residents enjoy a wide range of local amenities across both communities, including independent shops, cafés, pubs, supermarkets, healthcare services and everyday conveniences. Popular local landmarks include St Mary's Church and The White Horse pub in Church Fenton, alongside the historic High Street, All Saints Church and thriving local businesses in Sherburn in Elmet. Together, the villages offer a variety of dining, shopping and leisure opportunities for residents of all ages.
Surrounded by attractive countryside, the area provides excellent opportunities for walking, cycling and outdoor recreation. Public footpaths, green spaces and rural routes connect the communities to the wider landscape, making them popular destinations for walkers, runners and cyclists.
Both communities fall within the North Yorkshire Council area and benefit from active parish councils and community organisations that help organise local initiatives, village events and improvement projects. Regular activities, seasonal celebrations, markets, gala days and family events contribute to a strong sense of community throughout the year.
Getting around is easy thanks to excellent transport links. Church Fenton railway station provides direct rail services to Leeds, York and Hull, while Sherburn in Elmet railway station offers connections to Leeds, York and Selby. The nearby A162, A63 and A64 provide convenient road access across North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, with Leeds city centre approximately 15 miles away.
Residents enjoy access to sports pitches, recreation grounds, fitness facilities and community venues throughout the area. Local cricket, football and rugby clubs offer opportunities to stay active, while leisure facilities in nearby Selby, Tadcaster and Leeds provide additional options for sport, fitness and entertainment.
Young people can get involved in a variety of sports teams, scouting and guiding groups, youth organisations and community activities hosted in local halls, schools and recreation grounds. These opportunities help foster community involvement and personal development from an early age.
Both Church Fenton and Sherburn in Elmet have rich histories dating back many centuries. Church Fenton became particularly well known for RAF Church Fenton, a former Royal Air Force station that played an important role during the Second World War. Today, the former RAF base is home to Leeds East Airport and a number of aviation-related businesses. Sherburn in Elmet also boasts a fascinating heritage, having once been an important settlement in Anglo-Saxon times and later serving as a significant market centre for the surrounding area.
Together, Church Fenton and Sherburn in Elmet offer an attractive combination of community spirit, countryside living, local amenities and excellent connectivity, making them desirable places to live, work and visit.
