Kippax, Garforth, Micklefield and Sherburn in Elmet sit to the east of Leeds and North Yorkshire, close to major transport links and surrounded by green spaces and countryside. Known for their strong community spirit, these neighbourhoods combine village charm with great local amenities, making them popular places for families and long-term residents alike.

Residents enjoy a wide range of amenities, from independent shops and cafés on Garforth Main Street to everyday essentials at The Springs Retail & Leisure Park and local services throughout Kippax and Sherburn in Elmet. Hidden gems include Garforth Miners Welfare Hall, Micklefield Recreation Ground and the scenic public footpaths connecting villages and countryside. Sherburn in Elmet is also home to a thriving high street and popular community events throughout the year.

Kippax and Micklefield are part of the Kippax & Methley ward, where councillors Mary Harland, James Lewis and Michael Millar support local initiatives and community projects. Garforth falls within the Garforth & Swillington ward, represented by Mark Dobson, Sarah Field and Suzanne McCormack. In Sherburn in Elmet, residents are supported by local town councillors including Peter Baumann and Alex Tant-Brown.

Getting around is easy with regular bus services into Leeds, Selby and Castleford, while Garforth and East Garforth railway stations provide direct connections to Leeds and York. Sherburn in Elmet railway station also offers convenient commuter links, and nearby access to the A1(M) and M62 makes travel across Yorkshire straightforward.

Residents enjoy spending time outdoors at local green spaces including Garforth’s Green Lane area, Kippax Common, Micklefield Recreation Ground and the walking trails surrounding Sherburn in Elmet. The area offers plenty of opportunities for cycling, dog walking and family days out.

Young people can get involved in a range of sports clubs, youth groups and community activities across the area. Garforth Sports and Social Club, Kippax Welfare Juniors and local community centres regularly host football sessions, arts activities and seasonal events for families and children.

Stay active at local gyms and leisure centres including Garforth Leisure Centre, or support grassroots teams and local cricket and rugby clubs throughout the villages. Community fitness groups and outdoor activities are popular across the area all year round.

The area also has a rich history, from Kippax’s mining heritage to Sherburn in Elmet’s historic roots as part of the ancient kingdom of Elmet. Garforth and Micklefield both grew through Yorkshire’s industrial and railway history, while many historic buildings and village landmarks still remain at the heart of the community today.
