Location

Headingley lies north-west of Leeds city centre and is one of the city’s best-known neighbourhoods. Famous worldwide for its sporting venues and vibrant community atmosphere, Headingley manages to balance the energy of a bustling local centre with leafy streets, parks and open spaces. Its position along Otley Road makes it easy to reach the rest of Leeds while still feeling like a distinct place where neighbours know each other.

Local Amenities

Headingley offers a wide range of amenities that make everyday life convenient and enjoyable. At the heart of the area is the Headingley Central shopping precinct, once the Arndale Centre, which includes essentials like Sainsbury’s, Superdrug, Wilko and the local Post Office. Nearby you’ll find a mix of independent shops, charity shops and boutiques, cafés, restaurants and pubs lining Otley Road and surrounding streets.

Cafés and eateries range from relaxed coffee spots to established restaurants — there really is something for everyone’s taste. Headingley Library on North Lane is a popular local resource for books, events and community info.

Council Wards and Councillors

Headingley is represented within the city’s local ward structure, and your councillors play an active role in supporting community projects and local priorities. They’re a great first point of contact if you want to get involved with community planning or raise an issue affecting local residents. Details of your ward contacts and how to reach them are available through the Leeds City Council website or community centers.

Transport Links

Getting around from Headingley is straightforward with excellent public transport connections. Multiple bus routes run frequently along Otley Road into and out of the city, and Headingley train station provides quick rail links into Leeds and beyond. Headingley’s central location makes it easy to access other parts of West Yorkshire whether you’re travelling for work, leisure or appointments.

Local Walks

Headingley is surrounded by green spaces and scenic walking routes:

  • Beckett Park — a beloved local park complete with lawns, gardens, woodland, and tennis courts — great for picnics, gentle walks or meeting up with friends.

  • Woodhouse Ridge and nearby green corridors provide quieter trails for peaceful strolls or brisk walks, perfect throughout the seasons.

  • Headingley’s proximity to Meanwood Valley Trail and other neighbourhood parks means longer exploration is right on your doorstep.

These spaces are ideal for residents of all ages — including older adults — offering accessible paths, seating and plenty of fresh air.

Youth Provision and Clubs

Headingley supports creative and physical activities for younger residents through local sports clubs, drama and arts groups at community venues like the HEART Centre, and play activities in parks and communal spaces. There’s always something happening — from youth drama and arts workshops to community choirs and active clubs.

Sporting Interests or Leisure

Sport is part of Headingley’s identity. Headingley Stadium hosts major cricket matches and rugby league fixtures, drawing crowds from across Leeds and beyond.

For regular leisure, you’ll find gyms, tennis courts in Beckett Park, cinema experiences at Cottage Road Cinema (one of the UK’s oldest independent cinemas) and social clubs. Headingley’s cultural scene includes galleries, live music venues and cafes hosting events and classes.

Activities and Social Life for Over-50s

For residents over 50, Headingley has a welcoming network of activities and social opportunities:

  • OWLS (Older, Wiser, Local Seniors) – A local social group based on North Lane offering meet-ups, events, refreshments and a chance to connect with neighbours in a friendly environment.

  • Leeds U3A (University of the Third Age) – Offers a wide range of interest groups meeting regularly on arts, culture, languages and more — a great way to stay active and connect.

  • Memory Matinees at Hyde Park Picture House — relaxed cinema experiences designed for older residents and memory support groups.

  • Community organisations like STEP (Supporting the Elderly People) host activities and meet-ups for companionship and support.

  • Many local cafés and venues also offer accessible social spaces where residents can meet informally, enjoy events, talks or classes, and stay socially connected.

Historical or Special Features

Headingley has a rich past stretching back to the Victorian era and beyond. A fascinating piece of its history includes the Leeds Zoological and Botanical Gardens, a short-lived 19th-century attraction whose remnants still influence local heritage and street layout today.

The area’s iconic stadiums and long-standing cultural spaces like Cottage Road Cinema help make Headingley distinctive — a neighbourhood that blends heritage, sport, creativity and everyday community life.

Be part of creating your Neighbourhood Plan for Headingley

We’d like to work with you to create a Neighbourhood Plan for your area.

    What is a Neighbourhood Plan?

A Neighbourhood Plan sets out our commitment to you and your community. We want to help build a strong community with you, your neighbours, local businesses, local charities and so many more.

No-one knows your neighbourhood better than you and your neighbours, so to work out how the plan might look, we want to be guided by you.

A Neighbourhood Plan isn’t about “fixing problems”, it's about having a common goal of building a strong community. However, we will try our best to make your neighbourhood the best it can be for you and your community.

We want to know what's important to you and what you'd like to see in your community. We also want to hear what works well; is there someone in your community doing wonderful things for others that should be celebrated? Do you have an idea for your community, such as setting up a group activity that you’d like to arrange but need funding or resources to set it up? We can’t promise we can help with everything but let’s start the conversation.

    Take part in the Survey

We'd love to hear from you and begin to get an understanding of how you feel about your neighbourhood.

Have your say now by taking part in the survey - this should only take a couple minutes to complete. Your answers will only be visible to Leeds Federated staff, and we'd really welcome your honest feedback.

Click the link to the survey at the bottom of this page to get started!

    What's Next?

We'll be arranging walkabouts in your community soon and they will appear as 'Key Dates' on the right-hand side of this page.

We are also looking into arranging a drop-in session in your area as a further opportunity to discuss creating this Neighbourhood Plan for your community if there is interest shown to have this. Additionally, we are brainstorming lots of different ways you can get involved and we would appreciate your input on the survey!

    Stay up to date

If you would like to be kept updated about more opportunities to have your say, please follow this page by clicking the 'subscribe' button on the right-hand side to receive notifications.
