Location
Meanwood sits in the north of Leeds, West Yorkshire, just a short distance from the city centre. With a leafy, community-focused vibe, it’s known for its mix of village atmosphere, green spaces and easy access to city life. The neighbourhood attracts a diverse mix of residents — from families and professionals to long-standing locals and older residents who have lived here for decades.
Local Amenities
Meanwood offers a strong range of everyday facilities including shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, alongside essential services such as a medical centre, post office, library and dental surgery.
Green spaces like Meanwood Park and the Meanwood Valley Urban Farm are local favourites — perfect for picnics, strolls or just watching wildlife. The park has tennis courts, a bowling green and picnic spots, while the farm offers animal encounters, community gardens and a welcoming café space.
Nearby independent eateries, coffee spots and pubs — from classic local pubs to stylish bistros — help make Meanwood high street a vibrant social hub for residents of all ages.
Council Wards and Councillors
Meanwood sits within Leeds City Council’s local ward boundaries, and residents are represented by councillors who support community initiatives, local services and events. You can find details of your councillors and how to get involved in local decision-making on the Leeds City Council website or by contacting your local community centre.
Transport Links
Getting around from Meanwood is straightforward. Regular bus services run along the main roads into Leeds city centre and neighbouring areas, making commuting and leisure travel easy. The nearest train station is Headingley railway station, less than 1½ miles away, with frequent services into the city (about 12 minutes). The area is also well-connected by road and cycle routes.
Local Walks
Meanwood is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers:
The Meanwood Valley Trail offers a scenic 7-mile green route from Woodhouse Moor in Leeds through to Breary Marsh and Golden Acre Park, perfect for relaxed or more brisk walks.
Woodhouse Ridge is a woodland walk with paths, historic features and nature — great for gentle exploration.
Meanwood Park itself has paved paths suitable for accessible walking, gentle strolls or social meet-ups — lovely throughout the seasons.
Youth Provision and Clubs
Across the neighbourhood, groups and centres host youth activities, seasonal events, church hall clubs and creative workshops for younger residents. This community engagement helps build connections between neighbours of all ages.
Sporting Interests or Leisure
Meanwood embraces active lifestyles with facilities like tennis courts, bowling greens and walking trails. Local events such as the annual Meanwood Valley Trail Race attract runners and supporters from around Leeds.
Close proximity to Headingley and Chapel Allerton also means easy access to gyms, leisure centres and sports clubs for all ages and abilities.
Over-50s and Older Adult Activities
Meanwood and the wider Leeds area are well-served with activities for residents over 50, including:
Social groups and meet-ups like Social Over Soup with Age UK Leeds — a friendly weekly gathering with food and conversation tailored for older adults.
Meanwood Elders Neighbourhood Action (part of the Royal Voluntary Service) runs support, exercise sessions, lunch clubs, transport and companionship activities for older neighbours.
Local groups like Leeds & Harrogate IVC Social & Activity Group bring people together in relaxed, sociable settings.
Across Leeds there are walking, art, movement and wellbeing activities that can be great ways to stay active and connected.
Historical or Special Features
Meanwood has a rich heritage reflected in its green spaces and industrial past. Meanwood Park — once part of the Anglo-Saxon woodlands — still carries remnants of its history and has a memorial to local men lost in the First World War.
The area’s connection with nature and local monuments gives residents a strong sense of place and shared history.

No-one knows your neighbourhood better than you and your neighbours, so to work out how the plan might look, we want to be guided by you.
A Neighbourhood Plan isn’t about “fixing problems”, it's about having a common goal of building a strong community. However, we will try our best to make your neighbourhood the best it can be for you and your community.
We want to know what's important to you and what you'd like to see in your community. We also want to hear what works well; is there someone in your community doing wonderful things for others that should be celebrated? Do you have an idea for your community, such as setting up a group activity that you’d like to arrange but need funding or resources to set it up? We can’t promise we can help with everything but let’s start the conversation.
Take part in the Survey
We'd love to hear from you and begin to get an understanding of how you feel about your neighbourhood.
Have your say now by taking part in the survey - this should only take a couple minutes to complete. Your answers will only be visible to Leeds Federated staff, and we'd really welcome your honest feedback.
Click the link to the survey at the bottom of this page to get started!
