Location

Meanwood is a leafy, vibrant suburb in north‑west Leeds, sitting within the Moortown ward and the Leeds North East parliamentary constituency. It has a distinct village feel while being just minutes from the city centre, bordered by Headingley, Chapel Allerton and Adel.

Local Amenities

Meanwood offers everything from big‑name supermarkets to much‑loved independents. Residents benefit from Asda, Aldi and Waitrose, alongside cafés, bars and restaurants such as East of Arcadia and Zucco. The area also includes a medical centre, post office, health centres, a library and a dental surgery.

Green spaces are a huge part of daily life here. Meanwood Park spans 29 hectares with woodland, open fields, picnic spots, play areas and its well‑known footbridges over Meanwood Beck. The park connects directly into The Hollies and the Meanwood Valley Trail.

Council Wards and Local Councillors

Meanwood sits within the Moortown Ward, represented by Leeds City Councillors including Sharon Hamilton and Mohammed Shahzad. Residents can get involved in local democracy through ward meetings, consultations and community projects.

Community groups such as the Meanwood Valley Partnership also encourage residents to take part in local environmental projects and neighbourhood improvements.

Transport Links

Getting around Meanwood is easy thanks to regular bus routes including the 7, 38, 39, 91 and 781, which connect to Leeds city centre, Chapel Allerton, Headingley and wider West Yorkshire.

For rail travel, Burley Park and Headingley stations are just over a mile from Meanwood, offering quick links across the region.

For commuting by car, the area has convenient access to the Ring Road, and Leeds Bradford Airport is only a short distance away.

Local Walks

Meanwood is famous for its beautiful green walking routes. The Meanwood Valley Trail is one of Leeds’ best‑known trails – a 7‑mile route stretching from Woodhouse Moor through Meanwood Park and Adel Woods to Golden Acre Park. It offers woodland paths, streams, wildlife and scenic picnic spots.

Meanwood Park itself provides peaceful walks, access to The Hollies’ historic landscaped gardens, and routes into Scotland Wood.

If you enjoy longer or more adventurous walks, the trail links into the Leeds Country Way, making it easy to explore further afield.

Youth Provision and Clubs

Meanwood has a strong community focus on activities for children and young people.

Local options include:

Historical or Special Features

Meanwood has a proud and fascinating history shaped by centuries of industry, woodland life and community identity.

Highlights include:

• The name ‘Meanwood’ dates back to the 12th century, meaning Meene Wude – the boundary wood of the Manor of Alreton.
• The area played a role in the Civil War, where legend says the beck “ran red” – giving rise to the name Stainbeck.
• The Meanwood Valley was a hub of mills, quarries and tanneries from the 16th to 19th centuries.
• The historic parkland around Meanwood Beck once formed part of the Whalley family estate, later home to Captain Oates’ family before becoming Meanwood Park in 1954.
• The area is rich in preserved heritage structures, including old mill sites, quarry remnants and park gateways that form part of the Meanwood Conservation Area.
