Location

Meanwood is a leafy, vibrant suburb in north‑west Leeds, sitting within the Moortown ward and the Leeds North East parliamentary constituency. It has a distinct village feel while being just minutes from the city centre, bordered by Headingley, Chapel Allerton and Adel.

Local Amenities

Meanwood offers everything from big‑name supermarkets to much‑loved independents. Residents benefit from Asda, Aldi and Waitrose, alongside cafés, bars and restaurants such as East of Arcadia and Zucco. The area also includes a medical centre, post office, health centres, a library and a dental surgery.

Green spaces are a huge part of daily life here. Meanwood Park spans 29 hectares with woodland, open fields, picnic spots, play areas and its well‑known footbridges over Meanwood Beck. The park connects directly into The Hollies and the Meanwood Valley Trail.

Council Wards and Local Councillors

Meanwood sits within the Moortown Ward, represented by Leeds City Councillors including Sharon Hamilton and Mohammed Shahzad. Residents can get involved in local democracy through ward meetings, consultations and community projects.

Community groups such as the Meanwood Valley Partnership also encourage residents to take part in local environmental projects and neighbourhood improvements.

Transport Links

Getting around Meanwood is easy thanks to regular bus routes including the 7, 38, 39, 91 and 781, which connect to Leeds city centre, Chapel Allerton, Headingley and wider West Yorkshire.

For rail travel, Burley Park and Headingley stations are just over a mile from Meanwood, offering quick links across the region.

For commuting by car, the area has convenient access to the Ring Road, and Leeds Bradford Airport is only a short distance away.

Local Walks

Meanwood is famous for its beautiful green walking routes. The Meanwood Valley Trail is one of Leeds’ best‑known trails – a 7‑mile route stretching from Woodhouse Moor through Meanwood Park and Adel Woods to Golden Acre Park. It offers woodland paths, streams, wildlife and scenic picnic spots.

Meanwood Park itself provides peaceful walks, access to The Hollies’ historic landscaped gardens, and routes into Scotland Wood.

If you enjoy longer or more adventurous walks, the trail links into the Leeds Country Way, making it easy to explore further afield.

Youth Provision and Clubs

Meanwood has a strong community focus on activities for children and young people.

Local options include:

  • Thrive Leeds, a partnership of four local churches offering youth groups, drop‑ins, creative activities and support for 0–18 year olds. [thriveleeds.org.uk]
  • Meanwood Amateur Boxing Club, providing coaching, confidence‑building and fitness sessions for young people. , [meanwoodboxing.com]
  • Meanwood Cricket Club, which runs junior and U18 cricket programmes with coaching, volunteering opportunities and competitive matches. [meanwoodcc.com]

Sporting Interests and Leisure

The area has a rich mix of sports and leisure activities:

  • Cricket at Meanwood Cricket Club, with facilities for both adults and juniors. [Meanwood C...icket Club]
  • Boxing and fitness sessions at Meanwood Amateur Boxing Club. [meanwoodboxing.com]
  • Spacious parks ideal for running, outdoor fitness, dog walking and family play. Meanwood Park includes tennis courts, table tennis, a bowling green and play areas. [sport.leeds.ac.uk]

Local pubs and restaurants like The Alfred, East of Arcadia and Zucco also provide social spaces and community events.

Historical or Special Features

Meanwood has a proud and fascinating history shaped by centuries of industry, woodland life and community identity.

Highlights include:

  • The name ‘Meanwood’ dates back to the 12th century, meaning Meene Wude – the boundary wood of the Manor of Alreton.
  • The area played a role in the Civil War, where legend says the beck “ran red” – giving rise to the name Stainbeck.
  • The Meanwood Valley was a hub of mills, quarries and tanneries from the 16th to 19th centuries.
  • The historic parkland around Meanwood Beck once formed part of the Whalley family estate, later home to Captain Oates’ family before becoming Meanwood Park in 1954.
  • The area is rich in preserved heritage structures, including old mill sites, quarry remnants and park gateways that form part of the Meanwood Conservation Area.

    Meanwood MUGA, Stonegate Place survey

    Leeds Federated are working with Leeds City Council to explore the best way to improve the facilities at the Stonegate MUGA pitch, making it more accessible for a wider audience, including younger families.

    We would be grateful if you could fill in this survey to help us understand who is currently using the pitch and what, if any, are your main priorities for the site.

    Stop Loan Sharks – Support, Advice and Education

    If you’ve borrowed money from an illegal money lender, you’re not alone. Around 1.7 million people in England are estimated to be in debt to a loan shark.

    Stop Loan Sharks – Support, Advice and Education

    If you’ve borrowed money from an illegal money lender, you’re not alone. Around 1.7 million people in England are estimated to be in debt to a loan shark.

    Help is available, and you can get free and confidential support from the Illegal Money Lending Team. You can call 0300 555 2222 or contact them on WhatsApp at 07700 102773.

    On Monday, 12th October, 12-3pm, we'll be hosting a Get Involved workshop at the Printworks Kitchen and Bar café in Leeds (Printworks Campus, Leeds City College Hunslet Road, Leeds, LS10 1JY.)

    If you're interested in learning more about how you can get involved, share your views and shape our services, this workshop is for you!

    We'll explore the different ways you can get involved, from completing quick surveys on our Flash Feedback page, to joining the Customer Voices Panel or even being part of policy groups.

    Our Chief Executive, Matthew Walker, will also be there to talk about why customer involvement matters and the positive impact it can have on our services and communities.

    We continue to visit your area regularly. We are currently working directly with several customers in relation to garden condition, tree maintenance and unroadworthy vehicles.

    We are also considering repainting the car park lines at Bentley Lane and we will provide further information on this once available.

    Making sure your home is safe and in a good condition is a top priority for us. To help us keep your home up to standard, we carry out a Home Condition Survey every 5 years – this is sometimes known

    Making sure your home is safe and in a good condition is a top priority for us. To help us keep your home up to standard, we carry out a Home Condition Survey every 5 years – this is sometimes known as a Stock Condition Survey. The survey highlights any urgent repairs that you might not be aware of and helps us plan for future improvements in your home, such as a new kitchen or bathroom.     Have you heard of the Crisis and Resilience Fund?

    It’s a £1 billion annual UK Government scheme running from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2029, providing local councils with multi-year funding to help low-income households handle sudden financial emergencies and build long-term financial stability.

    You may be eligible for emergency help for essentials like food, fuel, clothing, and household appliances, as well as short-term assistance with housing costs and rent shortfalls.

    We visited the area during July and we continue to work with customers on untidy gardens, unroadworthy or seemingly abandoned vehicles and bulky waste items, where needed. We also identified a ginnel on the Stonegates which has become overgrown. We will work with the local councillors to see if this can be tidied up.

    If you have unwanted items, please donate them where possible; you can find out more here about donating. If your items aren't suitable for donating, you should take them to your local recyclng centre, more information can be found here. If you are not

    We loved seeing customers' photos of their gardens last year, so we're bringing the competition back.
